The Story of Thinlanga
Thinlanga was a remarkably handsome young man, yet due to a biological deformity, he was regarded as an evil and terrifying spirit. Some even whispered that he was not truly human but a spirit manifesting in human form. His most striking feature was his heart (or liver/internal organs), which protruded visibly from his chest. This exposed organ appeared raw and bloody, and he would often try to cover or stuff it back in using forest leaves. Despite his frightening appearance, Thinlanga was a great lover of music and was highly skilled at playing the flute (phenglawng) and the leaf-whistle (hnah tum). The Detailed Narrative Thinlanga is best known for the story involving a young woman who was struggling to lift her heavy load of firewood. While she was alone in the forest, she heard the beautiful sound of a flute and called out for help, assuming a fellow traveler was nearby. When Thinlanga emerged to help her, she was initially struck by his handsomeness. However, once she saw his true physical nature—the bloody, exposed organ in his chest stuffed with leaves—she was seized with terror. Thinlanga strictly warned her never to speak of what she had seen to anyone, threatening her with dire consequences if she broke her word. For a time, the girl remained silent, but the weight of the secret became too much to bear. One day, while gathering with others to fetch wood, she began to recount the terrifying encounter. Although the villagers tried to seal every crack and hole in the walls of the house so no one could eavesdrop, they missed one small opening. Thinlanga, who had been lurking outside and listening, burst through that single forgotten gap the moment she finished her story. He lunged at the girl, grabbed her, and violently threw her outside. She landed headfirst, her body stuck firmly in the ground with her legs in the air. Her sarong (pawnfen) fell down, exposing her in front of everyone. Thinlanga intentionally left her in this position to humiliate her as much as possible before the entire community.
